PATIENTS

Your Questions, Answered

  • Most people feel a tiny, fleeting pinch upon insertion, which quickly subsides. Once the needles are in place, patients generally experience no pain. Instead, it is common to feel a deep sense of relaxation, warmth, or heaviness, with many individuals even drifting off to sleep during the session.

  • 5NP treatments are uniquely designed to be barrier-free and non-verbal. Sessions typically take place in a quiet, comfortable group setting. A trained practitioner will insert the five needles into your ears while you sit comfortably in a chair. You will then rest quietly for 30 to 45 minutes. There is no need to talk about your history or symptoms during the session, making it a very low-stress experience.

  • The frequency depends entirely on your personal goals and what you are treating. For acute withdrawal, intense cravings, or severe trauma, daily sessions may be recommended initially. For general stress management, anxiety, or ongoing recovery support, weekly or bi-weekly sessions are often ideal. Your practitioner will work with you to create a tailored schedule.

  • The 5-Needle Protocol is exceptionally safe. The needles used are single-use, sterile, and extremely thin. Minor side effects are rare but can include slight bruising or a drop of blood at the insertion site when the needles are removed. Occasionally, a person may experience a temporary emotional release or lightheadedness, which easily resolves with rest and hydration.

  • Yes. Because the protocol is entirely drug-free and non-invasive, it does not interfere with pharmaceutical medications. In fact, it is frequently used alongside conventional medical treatments, counseling, and behavioral therapies to enhance overall wellness and coping mechanisms.

  • Yes, absolutely. Because the protocol works by regulating the autonomic nervous system, it is widely used to treat general anxiety, chronic stress, PTSD, depression, and sleep deprivation. It is also utilized in disaster relief settings to help trauma survivors overcome acute emotional distress and hyper-arousal.

  • No! The law specifies 5NP treats physical, emotional, psychological stress, trauma, and addiction. However, because these conditions are ubiquitous you do not need a formal diagnosis to offer this protocol. It is good for general wellbeing.

PRACTITIONERS

Your Questions, Answered

  • Per Texas Occupations Code § 205.303, eligible professions include:

    • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) and LPC-Associates

    • Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) and Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSW)

    • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT) and LMFT-Associates

    • Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDC)

    • Licensed Psychologists

    • Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN)

    • Physician Assistants (PA) and Physicians (MD/DO)

    • Pharmacists and Pharm techs

    • Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants

  • Texas requires a minimum of 70 total hours of board-approved auricular acupuncture training. This timeline typically consists of a compressed 3-day intensive course covering didactic (classroom) and initial hands-on learning (roughly 24 hours), combined with at-home homework assignments and a required clinical practicum involving supervised client treatments.

  • Yes, the 70-hour curriculum must explicitly include a Clean Needle Technique (CNT) course or an equivalent universal infection control precautions protocol. Trainees must demonstrate physical competency in creating a sterile field, safe needle handling, and biohazard disposal before treating clients.

  • The Texas Medical Board (TMB) issues the official Acudetox Specialist Certificate. While the training is conducted by independent entities like NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) or private board-approved groups (e.g., 5NP Texas), you cannot legally practice until you submit your certificates, transcript, and application fee directly to the TMB and receive your formal state credential.

  • Texas law allows Certified Acudetox Specialists to treat addiction, trauma, and physical, emotional, or psychological stress. A major legislative update significantly expanded the scope beyond traditional substance abuse, allowing practitioners to offer the 5-point protocol for general nervous system regulation, behavioral mental health, and community disaster relief.

  • The protocol is strictly limited to five specific acupuncture points on the external ear. Practitioners are not legally permitted to needle any other part of the body. The five precise auricular zones are:

    1. Shen Men (for calming the spirit and anxiety relief)

    2. Sympathetic (for balancing the autonomic nervous system)

    3. Kidney (for healing deep trauma and fear)

    4. Liver (for detoxification, anger, and emotional clearing)

    5. Lung (for respiratory healing and processing grief)

  • Practitioners must obtain signed informed consent and provide specific structural disclosures to every client. Under state regulations, you must explicitly notify each client of your specific professional qualifications and provide them with clear, written instructions on how to register a formal complaint against your certification directly with the Texas Medical Board.

  • A Texas Acudetox Specialist Certificate is valid for three years. To renew your credential prior to the expiration date, you must provide proof to the Texas Medical Board that your primary professional license (e.g., LPC, RN, LCSW) remains active and unrestricted, pay the renewal fee, and complete a minimum of 3 hours of continuing education specifically focused on auricular acupuncture during that three-year cycle.
